Hand Therapy

Hand Therapy

Catherine Valentino, OTR/L, OTD, MHSc, MAAL, BS

Hand therapy is an incredibly personal and complex area for rehabilitation professionals and patients alike. Hamasaki et al. (2018) highlight this complexity in their study emphasizing the interdependence of both motor and sensory aspects of functioning to impact pain reports for hand therapy patients. Having effective plans of care means developing comfort as a therapist to assess, thoroughly, a patient's pain and choose the best courses of intervention to achieve his or her goals. This course will assist therapists in developing their skills in testing differential diagnosis and developing an understanding of pathology leading to dysfunction. This course will be a good foundation course for new hand therapists and a refresher for those looking to review needed information. Additionally, each therapist will leave with testing and treatment recourses which they can apply in the clinic the next day. Physical and psychological factors related to rehabilitation will be considered during this course. Attendees will be able to identify tests needed for a number of differential diagnoses to enhance patient care and their knowledge as it relates to hand therapy preparation. Nerve entrapment in addition to physical dysfunction will be addressed as often these two components are appearing hand in hand for our upper quadrant clients. Participants will be able to select appropriate functional evaluations to bridge physical dysfunctional and psychological impact to develop more effective...

Optimizing Functional Movement

Optimizing Functional Movement

Lori Duncan, DPT, MTC, CPT

As therapists, optimizing functional movement is a high concern to keep our patients healthy, active, safe, and independent. It is imperative to not put patients in the "old box" (or any box for that matter) and understand that every human body wants to feel the best it can at any age. This workshop will teach therapists how to easily evaluate and treat the following movements: thoracic rotation, plank hover, trunk roll-up and squat. Once evaluated, patients and therapists will experience the immediate positive changes in the system including balance, breathing, gait, shoulder health, back health, and functional transfers. This workshop will teach participants how to improve four foundational movements that are critical to master at any age. Through an active easy-to-follow lab, participants will learn how to assess and treat these movements that are easy to teach at any age. Participants will take away modifications and tips to help teach patients the next day how to improve these four functional movements.Highlights Immediately improve your patient’s function, safety, and independence with four specific, easy-to-learn movements through an active lab Strategies to improve breathing, back health, bed transfers, gait, and other ADL’s

Exercise in Geriatric Rehabilitation

Exercise in Geriatric Rehabilitation

Nicole Dawson, PT, PhD, GCS

The latest practice analysis identifies over 53% of rehabilitation patients are over the age of 65 years. Many of these older adults have functional limitations due to the fact that older adults are generally less physically active than their younger counterparts or due to difficulties returning to normal function following illness or injury. Exercise is a non- pharmacological intervention that can have beneficial effects on multiple domains of function. However, the application of exercise by health care professionals is often under-dosed leading to minimal changes in this patient population. Older adults can pose unique challenges for clinicians due to their sedentary lifestyle and potential for complex medical history. Rehabilitation professionals are experts in movement science and should play an integral role in prescription of appropriate physical activity to ensure maximal levels of success with older adults, so we need to do better for this new majority of patients. This course will provide you with a better understanding of primary aging processes that may affect an older adult's functional status. An evidence-based approach for exercise prescription will be discussed to ensure that exercise science principles are used during plan of care development.Highlights Practical application of exercise prescription in older adults that you can use the next day Effective, evidence-based interventions to ensure positive outcomes in older adults

Examination of the Evidence Behind Rehabilitation Myths in Orthopedic Rehab of the Lower Body

Examination of the Evidence Behind Rehabilitation Myths in Orthopedic Rehab of the Lower Body

Paul Frizelle, PT, DPT, MS, OCS, MTC, CSCS, PES, CES

The fields of rehabilitation have been primarily driven to use tools that have been taught or espoused by "clinical experts." In the past two decades more resources have been placed towards research in clinically applicable rehabilitation information. Our view has evolved to begin implementing more evidence-based approaches for treating patients. Unfortunately, it often takes long periods for research to become available to the wider audiences. This has left the rehabilitation fields permeated by outdated information and inefficient/ ineffective treatments provided to patients. This course will examine some of the more prevalent myths that still pervade our fields and determine if the current evidence supports these practices. Participants will leave this course with a better understanding of the current research and how to effectively impact functional progress with their patients using evidence-based treatments.Highlights Best available evidence-based research to effectively treat orthopedic rehabilitation patientsReview common myths in rehabilitation that are inaccurate or outdated Easy methods to access and stay up-to-date on the latest available literature and research
