The Georgetown University Health Policy Institute reports that 65 million Americans report experiencing low back pain, while health economists estimate that the cost of chronic pain in the United States is $635 billion annually. Back pain is the leading cause of lost work days and has a high correlation to feelings of emotional distress. Current research is revealing the broad ineffectiveness of long-term pharmaceutical approaches and strongly suggests that successfully treating the multifactorial nature of chronic back pain requires an integrative, holistic approach. Kinesiology taping has become a main-stream approach to numerous diagnoses and functional deficits. This course will explore a combination application and functional facilitation approach to improve outcomes and client satisfaction with a number of complications. There will be guided video application as well as follow-through reasoning on approach techniques. We will examine the use of kinesiology tape for symptom management and objective gains in order to produce measurable outcomes for our clientele. A variety of techniques and taping products will be presented to give therapists many options of what is both available to treat their patients, and how to best use the tape and techniques. Return to School and Sport Considerations for Concussion Rehabilitation

Too often, a patient is seen after sustaining a concussion and given little to no guidance with regards to how to effectively and safely return to school and sport without excessive symptom provocation. These patients frequently show symptoms well beyond the typical timeline, as they have missed out on proper rehabilitation opportunities and potentially have developed secondary signs and symptoms related to prolonged removal from school and sport, such as psychosocial dysfunction and deconditioning. Rehabilitative clinicians now are involved with these patient's care from diagnosis to full recovery. This course will briefly address the multi-system involvement, not limited to oculomotor, vestibular, orthopaedic and cardiovascular, in the assessment and rehabilitation of the concussed athlete. The complexity of how each of these systems contributes to impairments and functional limitations will be reviewed. The most up to date research on evidence-based assessment tools will be presented as well as best practice tools for rehabilitation.
